Finally, the domestic hockey season has arrived, with the Glasgow Clan and Fife Flyers producing a roof-raising contest in the campaign’s curtain-raising clash. Shawn Cameron enjoyed a Challenge Cup debut to remember, netting a hattrick to complete a remarkable comeback win for Todd Dutiaume’s side.
“I was pretty impressed by our start,” Dutiaume said after Fife’s 6-5 win over Glasgow on Friday [9 September]. “It was a good character builder for us: being four imports short, coming into this tough building, and getting that result fills a guy with a little bit of confidence.”
Elsewhere in the Elite League, the Coventry Blazeenjoyed a positive start to the season, posting back-to-back wins over the Manchester Storm and Nottingham Panthers.
Adam Keefe’s Belfast Giants experienced a topsy-turvy weekend in the Champions Hockey League, losing to HC Davos before bouncing back with a win over Oceláři Třinec.
There was also plenty of action to watch in the final week of pre-season in the National Ice Hockey League. In Yorkshire, the Leeds Knights and Sheffield Steeldogs exchanged blows on Friday night, with Leeds prevailing 5-3 in a feisty affair.
Also of note: the Knights’ win over Sheffield featured the standout play of the weekend. Kieran Brown converted a Michigan, showcasing the high-level, homegrown talent in the NIHL:
WHAT A GOAL! 😱
The Michigan has landed in Leeds! Last night @kieranbrownie12 lit the lamp in an UNBELIEVABLE way🔥🚨
The 21-year-old scored 109 points (54 goals, 55 assists) in 48 appearances for the Leeds last season. He looks set to break new ground this time around.
