The Sheffield Steelers have announced the transfer of Marc-Olivier Vallerand from HK Olympia Ljubljana on a contract until the end of the season.
The 33-year-old returns to the Elite League after a half-season run in the International Central European (ICE) Hockey League, which saw him record 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in 17 appearances in Slovenia.
The Canadian is already well-known around the Elite League, having produced 175 points (86 goals, 89 assists) in 133 regular season appearances for the Coventry Blaze and Sheffield Steelers.
“We are thrilled to have Marco back where he belongs,” said Sheffield head coach Aaron Fox. “With Ljubljana falling out of the playoff race, this option became available to us in the last days and we’re happy we could get the deal done.
“We know exactly what we are getting here and he will inject some energy and instant offence into the group. Marco also plays a very reliable two-way game, which is very important down the stretch. He’s been a premium player for us and we are excited to have him back.”

Vallerand, who was voted into the Elite League’s All-Star Team last term, landed in the United Kingdom earlier this week and is expected to feature for the Steelers versus the Belfast Giants on Friday [27 January].
“It’s good to be home,” said the one-time Challenge Cup winner. “Everyone knows that Sheffield is my second home and the decision to come back here was the right one. Sheffield has always been there and the agreement came quickly once my agent spoke with Aaron.
“I’ve kept up-to-date with the team, I’ve followed the results and have received so many messages from the fans and it will be good to see them all again this weekend in Belfast.”
Analysis: Marc-Olivier Vallerand is marquee signing for Sheffield Steelers
Aaron Fox’s description of Marc-Olivier Vallerand as a “premium player” is accurate.
The Quebec-born forward has produced offence for every team he has represented and returns to Sheffield in impressive form after an injury-hit start to the season.
Vallerand’s arrival will boost the Steelers at a pivotal moment in the season, with a make-or-break double-header versus the Giants next on the schedule.
If he makes a fast start, it will make a significant impact on the title race.
The Steelers have pulled a rabbit out of the hat with this one.
