The Sheffield Steelers have completed the signing of centreman Patrick Watling from HC Banska Bystrica of the Slovak Extraliga.
The 29-year-old joins the Elite League outfit on a one-year contract, which will see him combine professional hockey with an MBA at Sheffield Hallam University.
“He plays a complete, 200-foot game and will play in all situations for us next season. Patrick is a creative, offensive player who is very explosive in tight areas. I believe his speed will cause problems at our level… he will be a top-end guy that I feel will run big numbers while being a reliable, two-way player.”
Watling boasts a wealth of experience from North America and Europe, headlined by spells in the Slovak Extraliga, ECHL, and Ontario Hockey League.
In 2022-23, the Sault St. Marie-born forward posted 30 points (six goals, 24 assists) in 34 appearances for HC Kosice and Banska Bystrica.
Before his move to Europe, Watling recorded similar offensive numbers in the third-tier ECHL, producing 214 points (79 goals, 135 assists) in 209 appearances for the Orlando Solar Bears, Tulsa Oilers, and Wheeling Nailers.

He also enjoyed impressive runs at the major junior and collegiate levels, including a 34-point season with the University of New Brunswick in 2019-20.
“I took a lot of references including chatting with Matt Petgrave about the club, the organisation and the city, I liked what I heard about the whole package, everything seemed to fit and fall into place,” said Watling of his move to Sheffield.
“I’m excited to get over and start work. The bonus for me is that I can complete my education with Sheffield Hallam University and that excites me as well, it is an incredible opportunity and I thank all involved in making this happen.”
Analysis: Sheffield Steelers’ Patrick Watling will make waves in top-six role
Patrick Watling’s move to the Sheffield Steelers will yield positive results in the Elite League.
The 29-year-old centreman brings with him a wealth of experience, having showcased his offensive prowess in various leagues.
His recent stint in the Slovak Extraliga with HC Kosice and Banska Bystrica is particularly noteworthy, with his two-way efficiency ensuring that he enjoyed an impressive first season in Europe.
Aaron Fox’s praise of Watling’s dynamic and explosive playstyle, along with his ability to contribute at both ends of the ice, further solidifies the belief that he will quickly adapt to the demands of the Elite League.
Asked about his playing style, he added: “I’d like to say offensive, I’m fast, I can make plays and score. I play an all around game but, yes, I am offensive.”
As a player who can operate at both the centre and wing positions, Watling offers the coaching staff valuable flexibility in their lineup arrangements.
Given his experience in different leagues and his ability to produce numbers consistently, it is reasonable to expect Watling to quickly acclimate to the Elite League’s pace and style of play.
As a result, he is likely to secure a top-six role on the team, where his offensive contributions and versatility will be crucial to the Steelers’ success in the upcoming season.
