Belfast Giants have announced the return of treble-winning captain David Goodwin, on a deal running until the end of the 2024/25 season.

First arriving in Belfast for the 2019/20 season, Goodwin has gone on to feature more than 200 times for the Giants across four seasons.

Having departed for Spanish side CH Jaca at the conclusion of the 2022/23 season, the US-born forward, 32, re-joined the Giants midway through the 2023/24 season, recording 28 points in 31 appearances

Goodwin makes retirement U-turn

Goodwin’s return was announced during the first intermission of Saturday’s 4-2 victory over Nottingham Panthers.

During his four spells with the Giants, fan favourite Goodwin recorded more than 230 points and returns to Belfast with a wealth of experience under his belt.

In a professional career spanning over 350 games, Goodwin has plied his trade in North America, Finland, Sweden, and Poland.

It is the second time that Goodwin has hung up his skates, only to reverse his decision and continue playing.

He is expected to make his first Giants appearance of the season when they host Sheffield Steelers on Saturday 18 January.

“I am delighted to be returning to Belfast,” Goodwin said.

“I am grateful to Adam [Keefe] and Steve [Thornton] for the opportunity to continue to compete for the Giants and represent this great city, and I look forward to working hard to help bring more success to the club.”

‘Embodies what it means to be a Giant’

Discussing the impact of the returning Goodwin, head coach Adam Keefe said: “It’s great to bring Goody back to Belfast again.

“His leadership on and off the ice embodies what it means to be a Giant, and throughout his time in Belfast, he always stepped up and was willing to do whatever it took to win.

“Goody is a professional through and through, and his re-signing is a great boost.”
