Cardiff Devils have added Canadian forward Brad Schoonbaert to their roster for the remainder of the season.
The 27-year-old was most recently with the Kansas City Mavericks of the ECHL.
Last season in his first year as a professional, he tallied nine goals and 12 assists for 21 points in 43 games for the Mavericks.
Prior to turning pro, Schoonbaert had a five-year career at the University of Calgary, winning a regular season championship in his final year.
Fresh blood for Cardiff
Schoonbaert joins a Devils side that sit three points clear at the top of the Elite League standings after a run of three successive victories.
He flew to the UK last weekend and is set to feature in the Continental Cup as the Devils go in search of European silverware.
It has been confirmed that Schoonbaert will wear number 15 for the club.
That number was previously worn by defenceman Marcus Crawford, who is currently playing in Kansas City for Schoonbaert’s former club.
Head coach Pete Russell said: “Brad is a good character, and that was really important for us in our search to strengthen our group.
“He is joining us from one of the top teams in the ECHL. He is a two-way forward who plays a smart game.
“He is responsible, plays with good habits and has great work ethic. He has the game to play in all situations, even strength and special teams.
“He will be a welcome addition to our group and will add something different. We are delighted he is coming to join the Devils for the second half of the season.”
Fellow Canadian suffers injury setback

While Schoonbaert prepares to make his Devils bow, fellow countryman Riley Brandt has been ruled out for up to two months.
Brandt suffered a lower body injury against Guildford Flames on New Year’s Day.
Although the injury is not as serious as first feared, the player still requires surgery and is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
“This is a big blow to our team,” said Cardiff managing director Todd Kelman.
“I am gutted for Riley. I thought he was playing his best hockey as a Devil this season, in particular the last few weeks.
“He brings energy and passion to our team every night, so we are going to miss him while he is out.
“The positive news is that he should make a full recovery.”
