Rumour: Will the Graz be greener for Bowns?

Cardiff Devils and GB netminder Ben Bowns could be set to swap South Wales for Graz, according to rumours coming out of Austria.

Speculation is rife that the 29-year-old looks set to move on from Cardiff after six years with Graz 99ers, who play in the EBEL his reported destination.

Austrian tabloid, Krone, published a story at the start of the month that Bowns had signed on the dotted line, a piece that is circulating in UK hockey circles now.

It is believed they have been looking for goalie to replace Swedish veteran Cristopher Nihlstrop and Bowns’ performances against them in the Champions Hockey League may have stood out for their coach Doug Mason, who has moved to bring him in.

If it goes ahead, Bowns would be reunited with old pal David Owen, also known as ‘Dease’ who was a former equipment manager with Cardiff and spent last season with Graz.

Nothing has been confirmed from either party over whether Bowns will definitely be on the move, but many believe it’s an opportunity well deserved for his consistent performances on the big stage.

Bowns joined Cardiff from Hull Stingrays in 2014 and helped them to win two Challenge Cups, two league titles and two play-off crowns in that time.

His performances in the Champions Hockey League and in the World Championships for Great Britain, doing his bit to help them into the top division and stay there in recent years.
