Glasgow Clan Chief Operating Officer Gareth Chalmers says the club beat off strong interest to sign Canadian trio Quinn O’Brien, Jacob Sweeney and Medric Mercier.
The three players are the first signings for the Elite League club for the 2020/21 season as the team begins to adopt a new look.
And Chalmers believes they’re the sort of players the club will be built on going forward.
“It was important that we started to create a new core group of players and when the opportunity came around to sign all three from Ottawa, it made total sense,” he said.
“We’ve made the decision to focus on a younger team this season and recruiting ambitious, hungry, exciting players from NCAA and USports will very much play a part in that.
“Quinn, Jacob and Medric come highly recommended to us from our USports contacts and all opted for the Clan despite a lot of interest from other EIHL clubs and European teams.
“All three players will bring the hard working, committed, energy driven game that we’re looking to build the club around during the new season.”
Since the premature end to the 2019/20 season in March, Clan have seen their head coach Zack Fitzgerald leave the club as well as 11 players, including seven who have retired.
It signals the beginning of a new direction for the Clan, signing three players from the University of Ottawa’s Gee-Gees team, with O’Brien the captain of them last season, who are turning pro.
The new Elite League season has been slated to start in December, with pre-season games possibly taking place in November.
