Edinburgh Capitals have signed 25-year old ‘D’ man Mike D’Orazio from St Mary’s University in Canada on a two-year contract.
D’Orazio had a number of offers from other clubs in Europe as well as an option for an AHL tryout in North America, but has decided to make the switch to the Elite League.
He said: When guys who are already coming to Edinburgh started talking about what the club is trying to achieve, the city and the availability of the MBA at the Edinburgh Business School at Heriot-Watt University, I made my decision quickly and I’m pleased to be an Edinburgh Capital.
“I’m very excited to beginning the next chapter of my professional career in Edinburgh and looking forward to living in a fantastic city.”
Player/Coach Michal Dobron added: “We’ve had great feedback on Mike from coaches and players. He’s a big guy, a good skater and he’s very strong.
“Mike will play a physical game and he can distribute and shoot. He also brings a number of years of leadership skills, having been captain of the London Knights in the OHL and an alternate captain at St Mary’s University.
“Mike had a great junior career and many people were surprised that he didn’t go straight into the AHL as a pro, but he chose the education route and had a great five years at St Mary’s.
“The deal came together really fast – he’s pleased to be joining us and we’re excited by what he brings.
“We’re grateful for the support from Heriot-Watt University to provide Mike with the opportunity to study for his MBA over the next two years.
“We’re always looking to improve each year, but this year a priority aim is to build from the back, and upgrading our defensive corps – we believe that Mike helps us to achieve that.”
