Who is 2023 NHL Draft Prospect Matvei Michkov?

Standing at 5-foot-10, Michkov possesses an immense amount of skill and potential as a right winger. Despite his smaller stature, he has consistently proven to be a dynamic offensive force, showcasing his scoring touch and playmaking abilities throughout his fledgling career.

This past season, while on loan at HC Sochi from SKA St. Petersburg, Michkov tallied an impressive 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists, despite playing for a struggling team. He has also been an offensive juggernaut for Russia’s national teams, consistently producing at a remarkable rate.

Displaying an exceptional ability to find the back of the net and create scoring opportunities, Michkov has consistently averaged above a point per game in international tournaments.

With his quick release, deceptive moves, and ability to find open ice, the Perm-born forward has tormented opposing goaltenders, cementing his reputation as a top offensive talent.

His impressive performances on the international stage have not only elevated his draft stock but have also solidified his status as one of the most exciting prospects to emerge from Russia in recent years.

However, it is Michkov’s unique circumstances that have cast a shadow of doubt over his draft position.

The prodigious forward is locked into a three-year contract in the KHL, which will cause some teams to avoid him in the draft. This contractual commitment, combined with the uncertainty surrounding Russian prospects amid the invasion of Ukraine, will cause Michkov to fall down the order.

Reports have swirled around the league regarding the player intentions and his desired destination. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, there are murmurs that Michkov may be attempting to manipulate his draft position, potentially to advance his hopes of joining specific teams, such as the Washington Capitals.

While these reports are unconfirmed, they have fuelled further intrigue and discussion surrounding the young Russian’s draft journey.

There is a clear consensus in the top four of the draft, with the Chicago Blackhawks, Anaheim Ducks, Columbus Blue Jackets, and San Jose Sharks expected to select Connor Bedard, Adam Fantilli, Leo Carlsson, and Will Smith, respectively.

There is only uncertainty with Michkov, with draft experts torn on where he will land.

The Montreal Canadiens could view Michkov’s talent as too enticing to pass up at fifth overall. His ability to generate offence and electrify the team with his puck skills is an alluring plan for a franchise that already includes Juraj Slafkovsky, Nick Suzuki, and Cole Caulfield.

But there is a clear issue at play for the Canadiens, who want to climb back into playoff contention as quickly as possible. Will they select a prospect who is unlikely to play for them until at least 2026?

For the Arizona Coyotes and Philadelphia Flyers, who pick sixth and seventh overall, the same question applies – does Michkov’s availability fit within the timeline of their respective rebuilds?

As a result, the most intriguing possibility lies with the Capitals at eighth overall. Speculation suggests that Michkov may be trying to orchestrate a draft slide to join Washington, a franchise renowned for its deployment of Russian talent.

If he is still on the board when general manager Brian MacLellan approaches the podium, Michkov seems like the obvious pick.
