Manchester Storm part ways with head coach Mike Flanagan

Manchester Storm have announced a mutual termination of head coach Mike Flanagan’s contract with immediate effect.

The Canadian took charge back in May, having previously spent time in the UK playing for Slough Jets and Telford Tigers almost 30 years ago.

He had coached in North America and Europe, prior to his move to Manchester from Austrian side EK Zell.

Flanagan previously led another Austrian side, EHC Lustenau, where he won the Austria2 championship after stepping up from assistant in 2020. A spell in Italy also saw him win silverware with Valpellice.

However, his move to the north-west has been underwhelming, and Flanagan leaves with Storm sat second-bottom in the Elite League standings, with just four wins to show from their opening 14 league games.

His final game in charge was a 6-4 Challenge Cup defeat to Coventry Blaze on Sunday.

After a run of eight league defeats in nine matches, the club say the decision to relieve Flanagan of his duties has been made “in the best interest of the team’s future”.

Assistant Mike Morin will take charge, supported by Ryan Finnerty, while the club search for new head coach.

“The decision to part ways with Flags was not an easy one,” Finnerty said.

“We are grateful for his contributions to the organisation, but we feel it is time for a change as we work towards our long-term goals.

“The team remains united and motivated to perform at the highest level for our loyal fans.”

Manchester Storm return to action on Friday night away at Glasgow Clan – the side immediately above them in the Elite League standings.
