Forward Matt McLeod has joined the Belfast Giants on a contract until the end of the season, transferring from the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones on Thursday [16 February].
The Canadian is the fifth player to be recruited by Belfast since the turn of the year, as the Giants seek to deepen their roster ahead of an intense final stretch.
“It’s great to have secured this signing for the rest of the season,” explained head coach Adam Keefe.
“Looking ahead, we have season-defining games coming up and the acquisition of McLeod will be an important boost – especially with [Tyler] Soy and [Mark] Garside on injury reserve. He’s a great teammate and a great player, who will add speed and energy to the line-up. We’re excited to have him here to help us.”
The 26-year-old arrives in the Elite League after two and a half seasons in the ECHL, in which he recorded 65 points (31 goals, 34 assists) in 138 appearances for Cincinnati and the Brampton Beast.
McLeod made 124 appearances for Canisius College in the NCAA before he turned professional, recording 25 points (eight goals, 17 assists).
“I’m really excited to get started with the Giants in Belfast,” said the Mississauga-born forward.
“I’ve heard great things about the League, the organisation, the city, and of course the fans, I can’t wait to play in front of the crowds at the arena. The team is having a great season so far. With all eyes on the championship title, I’m excited to bring speed and energy to the team and provide support wherever I can. I’m ready to get to work.”
Analysis: Belfast Giants make statement of intent with Matt McLeod signing
It’s official. The Belfast Giants are all in for the repeat.
Adam Keefe masterminded last season’s title win with a record of 43-9-2, which means his squad has plenty of work to do down the stretch this time around.
Matt McLeod is a smart addition for Belfast.
While the Canadian’s resume is far from incredible, it ticks about every box you would expect from a deadline day acquisition.
In his time with the Cincinnati Cyclones, he proved himself to be a trustworthy contributor anywhere in the depth chart and earned a brief loan to the American Hockey League’s Bakersfield Condors.

McLeod’s numbers in the NCAA were unimpressive, but his 40-point season in the ECHL should assuage any major concerns about his offensive production.
Ultimately, this is a statement of intent from Belfast.
Keefe probably doesn’t need another forward on his roster. But he wanted one. And now he has McLeod.
The Giants returned to the top of the table with their emphatic win over the Guildford Flames on Wednesday [15 February]. This transfer will only make them stronger. It’s game on in the title race.
