Guildford Flames forward Ian Watters has been named EIHL Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday 10th September 2017.
Watters and the Flames made their Elite League debut on Saturday in Belfast, going down 6-4 to the Giants, but it was their performance in the Challenge Cup on Sunday that really caught the eye, beating holders Cardiff 8-4 at The Spectrum.
It was Watters who opened the scoring for the Surrey side in the 17th minute, converting from close range after some strong work from team mate Brennan Yadlowski.
Cardiff hit back through Joey Martin less than 60 seconds later, but Watters restored the Flames lead before the first intermission, tipping Calle Ackered’s shot past Devils netminder Tom Murdy to register a short handed goal.
The Canadian winger, who joined Guildford from the ECHL Reading Royals in May, then completed his hat trick in the third period as the Flames began to accelerate away from their opponents, the game eventually finishing 8-4 in Guildford’s favour.
