Sunday’s Elite League fixture between Glasgow Clan and Guildford Flames was abandoned after the first period due to unsafe ice conditions.

The fixture was tied at 1-1 at the end of the first period when the decision was made to halt the game, due to what a Clan statement described as “serious issues with the ice” at the Braehead Arena.

An in-form Glasgow side came into the fixture looking to build on a run of five successive victories.

Meanwhile, Guildford were looking to regroup following a heavy 9-0 loss at Sheffield Steelers on Wednesday night, as they travelling north for their only game of the weekend.

In a statement released on Sunday night, Glasgow Clan apologised to supporters of both sides.

Per league rules, the fixture will be replayed in full at a later date as the abandonment came after the first period.

“We would like to apologise to all fans in attendance and those watching the webcast, and reassure everyone that all avenues were explored to finish the game in a safe manner,” Clan’s statement read.

“After careful consideration and consultation with the league, game officials, players, coaches and club management, the decision was made to postpone, with the welfare of the Glasgow and Guildford players, staff and supporters our top priority.

“We appreciate this is very disappointing and frustrating. We would like to thank everyone for their understanding and support in what was a very difficult and fast-developing situation.”

Guildford Flames captain speaks out

For Flames players and supporters, the abandonment came after a 16-hour round trip from Guildford to Glasgow.

In a video message posted to social media as the team made their way back home, captain Brett Ferguson, surrounded by his team-mates, paid tribute to his club’s travelling fans.

“I just wanted to say thank you for travelling up to Glasgow,” he said.

“Unfortunately the game got cancelled, but me and the boys really appreciate you coming up to watch and support us.”

A new date for the fixture has yet to be confirmed.
