Guildford Flames have announced the signing of Canadian defenceman James Shearer.

Shearer joins the club after a short stint in Hungary which saw him play just two games for Ujpesti TE.

The 27-year-old started the season in the ECHL with the Utah Grizzlies but has now opted for a return to the UK, having previously iced for Elite League side Coventry Blaze last season.

The 5’10 defenceman featured 50 times in league and cup for Coventry, scoring three goals and adding 12 assists for a total of 15 points.

D-line bolstered with Shearer arrival

Shearer cut his teeth in Canadian junior hockey, representing the USports University of Calgary Dinosaurs, Utah Grizzlies, Brandon Wheat Kings and Steinbach Pistons.

On the decision to bring him back to the UK, Guildford Flames head coach Paul Dixon said: “With our disastrous injury situation at the back, we have been playing way too short for far too long.

“We have been looking for guys who can come in and fill some gaps. It has taken longer than we had hoped, but we are pleased to have come to an agreement with James.

“Not only is he a quality player who will immediately take some of the load from our overworked crew, but he is a veteran of EIHL play and knows exactly what to expect, so his adjustment period should be fairly short.”

The club have confirmed that Shearer will be unavailable for this weekend’s trip to Glasgow Clan.

The Flames’ following fixture will take place on Saturday 18 January, at home to Dundee Stars.
