The Fife Flyers Ice hockey Club are delighted to announce the signing of 36 year old Czech forward, Martin Láthal for the upcoming season. Látal is no stranger to Elite Ice Hockey, having played for two seasons with the current league champions, Sheffield Steelers, between 2021 and 2023.
Prior to his time in Yorkshire, the 36-year-old, 5’10’ Czech played 14 seasons in the Extraliga in the Czech Republic, most recently with Litvinov. Before that, he played for 5 seasons in Mladen Boleslav, with his father on the management team, where he scored 63 goals and added 109 assists in 645 games. Before that, Martin played junior hockey in his hometown of Kladno.
He also had a few minor-league seasons in the QMJHL with Prince Edward Island, where he played with Dylan Quail, who would go on to play for the Flyers in the future. In 2008, he made his professional debut with Sparta Prague, playing 645 games, scoring 63 goals and adding 109 assists.
In his first full season with the club, Martin was third in the team in points with just over one point per game, scoring 22 goals and assisting 28 in 52 games. He then scored 41 points in the second half of the season in Yorkshire. In the previous season, Martin had played in the Polish Hockey League for Krakow, scoring 31 points from 32 games, before moving to the French Ligue Magnus for the remainder of the term.
Latál is the eleventh Czech native to play with the Flyers and is the fourth to have played in the European Hockey League (EIHL). His family is delighted to have him join the team.
“I had a great conversation with the coach and it was very quick to make my decision,” he said. “I’m looking forward to working with him and I’m sure we’ll have a great season and we’ll play well together.”
Tom Coolen, Fife’s head coach, said: “We are delighted to welcome Martin Latal to Fife, who brings a wealth of experience, speed and skill with him. He has proven his quality in a world-class competition such as the Bohemian Extraliga, and he was a key player and scorer for two seasons with the Sheffield Steelers.”
