Sheffield Steeldogs have confirmed the signing of British defender Lewis Baldwin.

The 17-year-old made 37 appearances for Manchester Phoenix before their withdrawal from the EPL.

Player/Coach Greg Wood said: “I’m really excited about the signing of Lewis. He’s a very talented young defender who needs the opportunity to play and gain experience at this level.

“His mobility is a real asset and with a bit of extra playing experience I think he can develop into a very good British ‘D’ man.

“With the season closing out it’s essential we strengthen and build for the future – Lewis is certainly part of that plan. As a club we are doing everything to build a solid base of young players that we can use for years to come.

“At the start of the season we knew this would be a transition season with so many changes – we’re still in that phase but we are trying to build, week in, week out.”

The Steeldogs are outsiders with Betfred to secure a play-off place, but Baldwin hopes he can help the club achieve its goal.

“It’s good to be back on a team – I was uncertain about where I was going to go, but I just want to play hockey,” he said.

“I think I’m quite an offensive defender – I’ll be hoping to step up. I want to get some wins here and push for a good run in the play-offs.”
