Coventry Blaze Head Coach Chuck Weber was a happy man after seeing his team spoil the party for Cardiff Devils in their final match at the Big Blue Tent.
Jordan Pietrus’ goal eight minutes from time sealed a 2-1 victory for Blaze to boost their chances of qualifying for the Elite League play-offs.
Weber said: “We talked pre-game about the chance to go down in history as the last team to win at the BBT and we did that.
“It was our first win here this season and a huge two points for us. It is a tough building to play for any team in this league. They are a fantastic side and there is a reason why they are leading the league.
“But I thought our boys showed a first-class effort. It was a workmanlike effort and we made a lot of sacrifices – we have a lot of guys in the locker room with stitches and ice bags.
“We also talked about having nine play-off games remaining and we know we need to pick up as many points as we can, especially when we are not expected to.”
Blaze welcome Sheffield Steelers to the Skydome on Sunday night, when the club will retire Dan Carlson’s number 26 jersey.
Weber added: “It is down to us to make it a fantastic weekend.
“Sheffield will be smelling blood in the water with Cardiff losing, as they know a win will help them climb the table and we need to be prepared for that.”
“We know how difficult our conference is having to play the top four teams in the league night in and night out, but that is the hand we are dealt.
“We have to beat these teams if we are to make the play-offs. We need to embrace that challenge and find ways to get points against them.”
